Here are some rules in the RPG you should know about.
General Rules
1. You must write literately. This meaning you are using proper spelling and punctuation, grammar is not a total must as your character could be of a different culture. If you need to use Microsoft Word or some other Spell Check system, go ahead and do so.
2. When you want to speak out of character in a place where you are typing in character, please add paranthesis like this, "(())" and type in the paranthesis "OOC:" so we know you are speaking out of character.
3. When in character, please distinguish between talking and actions by simply adding quotation marks when talking. When your character is thinking, please indent it and add in a ' at the beginning and end. Ex. 'I can't believe I did that' He thought.
4. RP your character realistically. If he is a rifleman, he cannot replenish the strength of your armor like a technician. Doing so will deduct valuable experience points and if it continues, you could be suspended for a short period of time.
5. Do not "power game". Controlling others characters is an example of power gaming. If the GM is not coming on frequently, then "power gaming" is acceptable. But if the GM comes on everyday, allow the GM to post situational posts and other such things. Please remember the GM has the reserved right to post a turn and no one else.
6. A fight between characters does not translate into a fight between players. Characters will have disagreements and problems with one another, because that's human, but it isn't expected of the players here. Punishment for those who bring petty differences to the board will be swift. Do not take what happens to your character personally.
7. Any information you know as a player cannot be known by your character unless your character has specifically been informed or is witness to it. For example, if you as a player know that a squad of characters will be ambushed, you cannot have your character act on that information and warn the squad. Maintain separation between you as a player and your character.
8. This game is meant to be fun, so hopefully you'll have some. Don't get upset if your character is killed - that's all just part of being a Marine, as is experiencing death in the field of combat. We hope that those whose characters have passed will continue with the RPG with another character.
Character Rules For RP:
1. If your character is shot in a place where you would not be able to normally walk, do not post your character running or walking. For instance, if your character was shot in the right leg and the right foot, he should either be limping or crawling.
2. Posts must be longer than one sentence in length. One sentence posts only take up space and provide nothing really important. Flesh your character out. You cannot flesh out your character in one sentence.
3. As said, RP your character realistically. You are no John Rambo. You are RPing as Marines. Your characters can have different perspectives on things (I particularly enjoy Mr. Death's) but they should not be able to take on an army of Strogg (unless I say so).
4. If you think shooting someone from a certain distance is impossible, don't type that you did it. If it is possible, that is a different story. We are looking for realism, not fantasy. Though this may be a Science Fiction RPG, realism is a key factor in this.
5. Try to keep all out of character posts in any place of this forum where role-playing is taking place to a bare minimum. If you must speak in out of character, please have it followed by an in character post. Do not post JUST an out of character post, as it will break up the flow of the role-play taking place.
6. After posting with your character, please wait until you've been responded to before posting again. If you fear you've left something vital out, edit before someone gets the chance to respond. This does not necessarily apply if you're taking part in a solo scene.
7. Profanity is a part of the Space Marine lifestyle, so it is generally expected. However, there needs to be moderation, so if your dialogue is needlessly littered with cursing, you may be asked to edit.
8. Realize your character has limitations. Your character cannot always be the hero, cannot always get to the hostage in time, cannot always kill a horde of aliens. There will be no jumping twenty-foot gaps or scaling mountains without breaking a sweat. Stay realistic.
Writing Rules
1. You must write at least a paragraph in length. This is to ensure that at least some character development is made in each post.
2. Spell check your posts. We ask that you write literately and without too many spelling and gramatical errors. If you feel your post is erroneous and full of mistakes, run it through a word processor. We need to be able to understand your posts so that others can role-play off of it.
3. All dialogue must be signified with quotation marks. We need to know when your character is speaking and when he or she is not. Use quotation marks to do so. All thoughts must be indented and must use '' to signify what your character is thinking.
Campaign Rules
1. Once a campaign is started if you have not posted within the first five turns you will be removed from the campaign. Re-admittance will only be allowed with a legitimate excuse, such as finals or family emergencies.
2. Only the GM can post situational posts.
3. The GM controls all NPCs.
4. It is up to those in charge to lead their Marines and to lead them efficiently. Those who do not follow orders will be dealt with swiftly with just punishment.
5. All plot essential information known to the player must not be known to the character. Remember to keep your character at a separation from yourself.
6. If your character is in a platoon staff position, please realize that while on board the U.S.S. Normandy or on base, your character may have other things to do aside from lead Marines and 'chill'. He may have paperwork to do and platoon information to work out.
NOTE: In order to give players more variety, choices, and control in the game, I will allow those within staff positions of the platoon pick where all new members accepted into the game go upon entering the platoon. You will be able to place them in a squad and the squad leader will have control over what fire team they may go into if the platoon commander allows fire teams. This is to allow more control for the players and to create a richer playing experience.
