A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE SPACE MARINE CORPS
1.1 THE SPACE MARINE CORPS (SMC)
The Space Marine Corps is an interstellar force-in-readiness. This role, distinct from that of many other interstellar military organizations, stems from Earth's position as a starfaring, colonizing power, and its leading role within the Space Military. Though the term "marine" has its roots in describing a soldier who fought from ships at sea, in the modern era it has become synonymous with those elite forces of soldiers who are always ready to fight, regardless of their planet's readiness for war, and who are capable of operating far from their home soil. The Space Marine Corps has a dual responsibility - first to serve on land, air, sea, and space; second, to exploit advantages in readiness and interstellar deployment capability.
The capability to project power across the vast reaches of space to the surface of a distant world is an essential element of planetary strategy. Space Marine forces, operating with the Space Navy's many space fleets, are the colonies only major means to forcibly enter any hostile area from space. They are an independant combined force having all the elements of combat power. Their versatility and responsiveness add a significant dimension to the options available to the Space Military's High Command in time of crisis.
The Planetary Security Act of 2090 established the Space Marine Corps structure as eight combat divisions and seven aerospace wings, plus the support services organic to these formations. At the time of fiscal year 2113, Space Marine Corps strength stood at 300, 000 Marines. Reserve man power now stands at 80, 000 Marines, comprising of a nineth division and two extra aerospace wings.
The SMC is fully integrated into the joint command structure of the Space Military's High Command, under the command of a Sky Marshall. The Sky Marshall must be a high-ranking official of the Space Navy to earn such a prestigious command position over the Space Navy and Space Marine Corps. The Space Marine Corps is tasked with maintaining the collective security of all Earth's signatories and their recognized interstellar colonies. Operating in tandem with local forces, the SMC is often the first line of defense and the vanguard of any counterattack.
The Space Marine Corps currently is engaged in its endless struggle to defeat the Strogg War Machine, an alien race first discovered when it invaded Earth in 2060. The Global Defense Force, which is under the Global Defense Force Command, is the primary defense force of Earth and every nation's military is a recognized reserve force for the GDF. The Space Marine Corps also finds many of its recruits from the United States Marine Corps, though citizens from any nation or colony may join the SMC or SN. All recruits head to Marine Corps Recruit Depots San Diego and Paris Island for Boot Camp, which has remained primarily unchanged in recent times.
1.2 SPACE MARINE CORPS RECRUITMENT AND TRAINING
To be eligible to join the Space Marines, a potential recruit is required to have a High School diploma (or the equivelent), have a clean police record, be between 147cm and 200cm tall, and pass a physical examination and some simple written tests. Basic training has remained unchanged since its creation, sharing recruitment facilities with the United States Marine Corps such as Marine Corps Recruit Depot Paris Island and San Diego. Though, two more recruit depots specifically for SMC use are being constructed on Pharis V and Brandon IV to remain closer to those in the colonies.
Statistics show the average recruit is 177cm tall, weighs 72kg, and is a high school graduate. The ration of women to men in the Corps is approximately 1:2.6. Of the thousands of recruits that apply each year, some 29% fail to make the grade.
Officers are inducted at the Officers Candidate School at Camp Barrett, Quantico, VA and Camp Bronco, Alysium City, Tyson I, though the Space Marines continue the ancient tradition of accepting officers from the "Blue Water" naval academy at Annapolis, as well as the Naval Aerospace School at Space Station Obsidian over Mars. After basic training, officers pursue their military specialty. Aerospace crew go to the aerospace schools at Space Station Obsidian or Space Station Atlantis; artillery officers go to the U.S. Army field artillery school in Fort Sill, OK; armor specialists go to Camp New Hope, Gargan II; however, infantry officers take the specialized infantry course at Quantico and an advanced hostile environments course at Camp Romeo, Luna, the moon of Earth and are then shipped to a secondary advanced hostile environment school on Mars.
